A good quick read, if you like a good mystery that promises only light entertainment Characters had enough depth to grow somewhat fond of them and the interplay of relationships The plot is fairly simple and has all the right elements for a good mystery affairs, motive and a sketchy suspect or two Set in Cumbria, during a cockermouth flood, it has great descriptions of the local scenery.

With the disaster of Hurricane Harvey, this seemed like an appropriate read as Beckham details the massive storms which have led to historic flooding in the Lake District We get to see Skelgill in his other persona as a rescue worker With his boat, he heads out and rescues his aunt under horrendous conditions and, with others in his rescue team, they risk life and limb to keep people safe The flooding serves as an eye opening backdrop in this mystery In the midst of all the chaos, Roger Alco Wit [...]

Aye Brilliantly enjoyable readingBruce Beckham s character DI Daniel Skelgill is a masterwork His proclivities and foibles make him totally unique in the British police procedural genre The depth of Skelgill s character is complemented and completed by the pair of contrasting detective sergeants his Sancho Panza and Dulcinea, if you will.Mr Beckham s dense writing style which denotes every raised eyebrow and twitched nostril and his use of Anglo Saxon to delineate characters differentiates Aye B [...]

This one only gets 3 stars from me because it was a slow read, taking forever to get to the meat of the mystery Inspector Skelgill seemed to sleepwalk through it until the very end when finally the action picked up A man takes off in his kayak supposedly to check on his store as the rivers converged and flooded the town He is spotted once, then gone, never to be seen again until he is found drowned in sea water, not river water The suspicion is that he may have planned to disappear from hi This [...]

Felt slow, really had to focus to keep getting through it I liked the characters and the local language Lot s of activity happening behind the scenes but not talked about I am pretty sure Skelgill had a couple of affairs but it was like turning the page led to the next day or a different scene as if nothing happened I would sear he got roofied by the reporter and they might have been heading to sleeping together but the next page has him going fishing with an extraordinary hangover oh wel Felt s [...]
